Amazon.com Review
Many associate Ginsu knives with the product’s kitschy infomercial from the ‘70s that begins with a karate kick to a watermelon and proceeds with a demo of these knives cutting through just about anything in the house. Like the original product, Ginsu’s International Traditions is designed for the home cook who is not attuned to the maintenance required of a more high-end knife. However, this line is an improvement on the original, offering the weight, balance, and style of a commercial-quality knife, while meeting current design trends and performance expectations.

This 18-piece set packs an excellent selection of knives in a contemporary black hardwood storage block and throws in four serving utensils as a bonus. The cutlery includes: an 8-inch chef’s knife, an 8-inch slicer, an 8-inch bread knife, a 5-inch boning knife, a 4-1/2-inch utility knife, a 3-1/2-inch paring knife, and six 4-1/2-inch steak knives, plus a pair of shears. Blades are constructed from stainless steel and feature a two-dimensional serrated edge that is symmetrically-cut on either side for more accurate slicing and for either right- or left-handed use. Edges are still as low-maintenance as ever and never require sharpening. The blades do not have full tangs but are instead encased in a strip of bakelite, which is sandwiched within a brushed stainless-steel handle. The steel handle provides some of the weight of the missing tang and a sleek, modern style. The four additional serving pieces in this set are also stainless-steel and include a fork, slotted spoon, solid spoon, and spatula. Ginsu covers these International Traditions knives under a limited lifetime warranty, and recommends manual cleaning with hot, soapy water to keep them in top shape. --Cristina Vaamonde

Ginsu Steak Knives5
I'd been dealing with a steak knife set that I hadn't been happy with for a while. Remembering how well the original Ginsu knives had worked, I did some searching and came across this stainless steel set. I took the plunge and ordered a dozen knives, at this price if they were garbage, I'd throw them out. They arrived today and I must say I was quite impressed at the look and feel of them. They have a heftiness to them I was glad to feel, unlike the lightweight set I was about to discard. I tested them on some leftover steak I had in the fridge....they cut it like butter! I'm delighted beyond belief. Sure you can spend 10 times this amount on steak knives, but I doubt you will find ones that do the job better. Looks, feel, quality and a bargin basement price. Trust me!

Steak knives5
Product was very good. Cuts well, looks good, and knives have good weight to them.

Ginsu steak knives5
These are great knives. Serrated and very sharp with solid brush stainless finish....at 4 for $10, I got an excellent deal...

Very sharp and attractive set!5
I haven't mounted them under the cabinets yet but for the money I don't think this set can be beat! They are extremely sharp and cut like no other! You won't be disappointed and I am thinking about getting two more sets as Christmas gifts. After all of these years of seeing the commercials I am a believer!

Wonderful5
I got these for my mother. They are super sharp, I would keep them in the block they came in so you won't get cut trying to grab them from a draw. They cut just like a sword does with little to no effort.

excellent quality5
I was very pleased when I got to use my new set of knives, they are very sharp and also have a perfect weight, that makes them very easy to handle. I love cooking and this tool is a plus for me... I highly recommend it....

kick @$$ knifes5
If you would have told me I would be buying ginus as a serious knife I would have laughed in your face. Well I did and these knifes are great. My wife the chief in the house loves them, I just cut stuff with em. $100 for a set buy em.

Great knife set4
Pros: This knife set is really good. The blades are all sharp and cuts through fruits and vegetables seamlessly. The large knife is good for meat (tried on chicken).
Cons: The knife is not dishwasher safe and needs to be cleaned and dried immediately after use.

Love 'em!5
I bought this product on price not expecting much, but they are excellent and fit with my kitchen decor. Wish they had a higher spec product available.

Good Knives...but smaller4
I bought this set for my MIL who is always coveting my set of Ginsu knives. I have the full block set which includes the steak knives & kitchen sheers. She didn't need the steak knives, so I bought her this prep set. I was disappointed to that this set is not a full sized set. The length of the knives is written in the item description, but I think they need to make it more obvious that these knives are a miniature version of the full sized ones.

Sharp, very sharp!4
These four knives are good looking and sharp. And I really mean sharp. They can easily slice vegetables and the like. They have a good nicely balanced feel in your hands. I also like they dont take up too much room on your counter. And for the selling price you cant go wrong

Nice set for the price5
Its a nice set for the price. They cut nicely, are weighted nicely and are attractive and the block is attractive and takes up the minimal space I had for it.

Customer Reviews

Fantastic Deal5
Don't let the name Ginsu fool you: This is a beautiful, professional-level knife set that screams quality--at an exceptionally low price (list price = $169.95). Ginsu has really upped its game (note that there are a lot of cheap knock-off knives out there that call themselves Ginsu, especially Ginsu 2000 and 3000, which are total junk). Several other points: 1. This set recently won a best in category Housewares Design Award; 2. The knives and block are made in China (just an fyi); 3. The company is actually owned by Berkshire Hathaway, i.e., Warren Buffet; 4. You should not run these through the dishwasher; 5. You will need to think about a sharpening system in addition to usual honing steel that comes with the set (I suggest the Edgemaker Pro system, which, if you search hard enough on the 'net, can be had for as little as $22.95 with free shipping). Shipping was very fast from this merchant.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly5
The Good:
Excellent knives for $119. Good weight and balance of handle and blade. It feels great in your hand. Razor sharp but sharpening is a must before each use (or at least every other use). It may not have the prestige presence of a Wusthof or Henckels set on the kitchen counter, but it DOES NOT look cheap. Its Japanese design and bamboo block make it more of a resemblance of a Shun knives set. And Shun is actually more expensive than the two more popular brands.

The Bad:
Handle's finish becomes very flat and dull after wash. Dab a little oil on a paper towel and rub it on the handle and it will look fantastic without being slippery.

The Ugly:
The Ginsu name seems to make it sounds like a cheap TV offer knives set. But believe me it looks and performs like a $500 set.

***Best knives set for your money. You will not find a better knives set for $120 unless you find a set of high end Shun, Wusthof or Henckels for 85% off at a closeout sale somewhere.

Beautiful Knives5
I first bought just the santoku knive and absolutely fell in love with it, so I decided to buy the full set, figuring an extra santoku knife certainly couldn't hurt considering how useful it is.

First, if you are a fan of Japanese knives like Shun, these give you an equally handsome and *far, far less* expensive option. I am not saying the blades have the same beauty and quality of Shun Damascus steel, but they are sharp, keep their edges well, and are easily sharpened. More importantly, they work very well, so well that I have stopped using my other knives.

This set would also make an excellent graduation or wedding present. And the Ginsu name also gives a fun, kitsch quality.

Amazon.com Review
Any person that has ever tried to slice the golden crust of a baguette with a paring knife, or to peel an apple with a chef’s knife, knows the importance of stocking a wide variety of cutlery in the kitchen. A single recipe may require four or five different knives to cut, dice, and slice with efficiency and ease. To cover this wide gamut, Ginsu offers a new comprehensive cutlery set. From the International Traditions cutlery line, the 14-piece set comes equipped with a 3-1/2-inch paring knife, 4-1/2-inch utility knife, 5-inch boning knife, 8-inch slicer, 8-inch chef’s knife, 8-inch bread knife, six 4-1/2-inch steak knives, kitchen shears, and knife block. With this wide variety of blades, the set makes a wonderful housewarming gift for a young family establishing their first household.

The blade of each knife was forged from Japanese 420 series stainless steel with full tang for increased balance and permanence. The hygienic stainless-steel construction resists rusting, staining, and corrosion. The craftsmen at Ginsu employ a specialized Symmetric Edge technology, notching matching serrations on both sides of the blade for enhanced precision and smoothness for left- and right- handed users alike. The balanced two-dimensional serration eliminates the need for sharpening these knifes. Stainless-steel handles are curved to provide an ergonomically-friendly hold for chefs. The knife block features sturdy hardwood construction to protect knives and permit quick access while cooking. For cleaning convenience, the knives are dishwasher- safe. Ginsu covers the set with a limited lifetime warranty. The knife block measures 8-1/2 by 6 by inches. The set weighs 9 pounds upon shipping. --Jessica Reuling

Customer Reviews

Most Don't Know How to Rate a Knife5
I am simply amazed at what people consider quality. If you look at most of these reviews they are basing the quality of these knives if they have rusted. One even called it cheap because it rusted.

Folks, these are forged knives made from 420 steel. You can only go up one more step in quality and retain the same hardness without using exotic metal processes. Low quality cutlery is generally made out of grades like 409 and 430.

Here's how it works. The sharpest knife is made out of high carbon steel. High carbon steel is the hardest and therefore also keeps its sharp edge longer. The more carbon in steel the more it is going to rust. Something with a lot of carbon is a standard metal shop file... the type of file that you use to sharpen you garden tools. Leave it out in the rain and you'll have more rust than you ever imagined. Most likely that same file is the hardest (and highest tempered) metal you'll ever hold in your hands.

To prevent rust you add chromium. The more you add the less it will rust. Once you add over 13% chromium you are legal to say you have "stainless steel." The only problem with adding chromium is the steel can not be tempered as hard. Chromium also adds "gumminess" (relative to hard steel) which makes sharpening difficult because it is like trying to sharpen chewed bubble gum. IOW, under a microscope you'd see little pieces that extend to the left and right instead to a fine point. You know, like the bubble gum stuck to the bottom of your shoes in a parking lot.

420 steel keeps the chromium level as close to 13% as possible. Why? So the steel can be hardened. Hardness is measured on a scale called the Rockwell Hardness scale. This steel can go up to a RC56 hardness. Henckels FourStar only goes up to a RC58.

Some Damascus knives go up to RC60 but they can cost upwards of $1,200 per set. They also tell you to "hand wash only." Why? Simply so they won't rust since you'll quickly get them dried after hand washing.

Some of the finest butchering knives are made by Sheffield and have been making knives since the Middle Ages. They really became popular starting around the 1600's. For butchers they have two types of knives; hardened carbon steel and if you are one not to take care of your knives they will sell you the same model in 420 stainless steel. Six steak knives will cost you about $350.00 if you can't afford the butcher's knife.

I lost my fine Henckels in a divorce and replaced them with a less expensive model of Henckels. I was disappointed that they were not rusting in the dishwasher. What that meant to me was the steel isn't as hard as my old Henckels.

But yes, if you want to spend a lot more and get Henckels they may not rust quite as much and they will be a harder knife. That's because you move into a much more expensive stainless steel that contains molybdenum and vanadium. You will also get a sticker that tells you to hand wash. If you ever watch professional cooks you'll see that they have a dish towel tucked at their waist. They will use this repeatedly to wipe their knives. Why? So food will not stick to the knives, dry and make a rust spot.

I will never 'hand wash' a knife unless I plan on using it in a few moments. I don't care what they say about not using a dishwasher. It is so very, very easy to remove rust from knives. Just use your Comet. I like to use Bar Keepers Friend. It does the same as Comet but designed to remove rust and shine stainless steel. A couple of wipes gets rid of the stain or rust.

Don't forget this is Stain Less, not never-stain, never-rust.

Excellent value and wonderful for left handed people!5
I bought these knives(the steak knives), because I am left handed and most knives are serrated only on one side - so cutting is really unsafe - the knife cuts to one side. These are serrated on both sides and cut straight. Very sharp though - take care. I love them. Sleek design and I've received so many compliments on them. Much better than more expensive knives I've tried (and had to donate to charity). Wonderful!

Totally amazing kinves for the price!!!!!!5
These knives are amazing for the price. you can't beat it! they are sturdy, cut amazingly well, never need to be sharpened and i haven't had any problems with rust! I never put them in the dishwasher because i know that they would probably start to rust. its so easy just to hand wash them. Nothing will stick the to blade so its an easy rinse wipe and your done!! For anyone looking to buy great knives but don't want to spend a lot of dough, this is the buy for sure!
